Majors & Minors

I have heard many Christians tell me that they really care about the “majors” and that it’s okay to disagree on the “minors”. What do they then qualify as majors? Anything that has to do with salvation, they would label a “major”. Those that hold this position will say that they are big picture people and that the only thing that matters is getting people saved. This is one of the most irritating types of belief in Christianity.

Who are these people to decide what doctrines in the Bible are related to salvation and which ones are not? Many people will jump to Romans 10:9 and say that you have to confess that Jesus is Lord and that the resurrection is true. If this is the only verse that you need to be saved, why do we have 66 books of the Bible? I’ve mentioned before in another blog that the two truths mentioned in Romans 10:9 are probably the most supernatural things in the Bible, yet many will say they can believe these and not other supernatural stories in the Bible.

The Bible is meant to give us understanding so that we can be the ground mentioned in Matthew 13:23. The understanding, or belief, in the whole Bible is a part of salvation. We are told above all things to put on charity (Col. 3:14). Charity believes all things (1 Cor. 13:7). What all things are you supposed to believe? Obviously not everything people say, but everything God says.

But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

My point here is that there are no such things as “majors” and “minors”. This is a disgrace to characterize the word of God this way. Everything in the Bible is important and builds upon itself to be able to understand deeper doctrine. I would argue, fervently, that all the Bible is related to salvation. We must study to maintain our faith and not be a part of those that fall away because they lack understanding, or belief, in all of the word of God.
